Engineering

Advanced solutions inside the engine

The PD-8 was developed using advanced technologies and the latest Russian materials, including additive manufacturing. Mathematical modelling was also used as part of the certification substantiation.

FOR THE FIRST TIME

A supersonic high-pressure turbine stage with a pressure reduction ratio of four is used in the PD-8. Gas pressure decreases fourfold from its initial level at the turbine inlet, contributing to improved specific fuel consumption.

Extreme conditions

Tested beyond normal operation

Certification test

BIRD STRIKE

Four bird carcasses were fired at the engine within one second at full throttle, simulating a flock of birds. Impact speed corresponded to aircraft take-off and landing speed: 103 m/s. The engine retained stable operation and thrust control.

Certification test

SEVERE HAIL

During a 30-second test, approximately 220 kg of ice was fired into the operating engine at speeds of up to 240 m/s. The PD-8 maintained stable operation.

Certification test

HEAVY RAIN

Several tonnes of water were injected into the engine during each test cycle, simulating heavy rainfall during take-off, climb and landing. The engine operated reliably.

Certification flight

PROVEN IN NATURAL ICING

The PD-8 engines also demonstrated flawless operation in the Arkhangelsk Region during certification flights of the Superjet aircraft in natural icing conditions.

Safety comes first

Fan blade-out test

During certification testing at take-off mode, a fan blade was deliberately damaged. Its fragments remained contained within the engine casing, confirming the structural reliability required for flight safety.

150 HOURS

Endurance certification test

Operating at the limits

For a month and a half, the engine was tested at maximum working limits, including maximum thrust, maximum rotor speeds and maximum low-pressure turbine gas temperature.
